The Indian cricket team will soon get a new head coach as the tenure of the current head coach Rahul Dravid will end with the completion of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.

Rahul Dravid’s tenure came to an end with the ODI World Cup 2023 but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) convinced him to stay till the end of the T20 World Cup 2024. As per various reports, the former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir is frontrunner for this post and his chances of getting selected have increased a lot after the IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders won their third title under his mentorship.

Interestingly, KKR won their two titles (2012 & 2014) under Gautam Gambhir’s captaincy and it not just about the IPL, Gambhir has proved himself as a great team player when he played for India and he has also played an important role in India’s 2007 T20 World Cup win and 2011 World Cup victory.

Though there were reports that Gautam Gambhir was the only candidate for the interview which had taken place a couple of days back, now it is being said that former Indian cricketer W V Raman has also given the interview for the post of the head coach.

Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has spoken on this matter on his YouTube channel. As per him, “Gautam Gambhir has given the interview. It’s been said that it was a virtual interview as opposed to WV Raman, who gave a fantastic presentation. I have just read that. Gautam Gambhir is the frontrunner in this race. It’s been said everywhere and we have also understood that.”

Aakash Chopra stated that the Indian team will go through a transition phase which won’t be easy as there are quite a few players in the team who are on the wrong side of the 30. He said, “I am saying it will be an interesting tenure because you will have to manage the transition here, and that is never an easy thing. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Mohammed Shami, maybe Ravindra Jadeja, especially their roles in T20s, there are plenty of people who are on the wrong side of 30, 35 to 37, including Ravichandran Ashwin.”

Aakash Chopra further added that Gautam Gambhir will need to prepare teams for the ODI World 2027 and also for the T20 World Cup 2026 which will be played in India and Sri Lanka. Chopra stated, “In the next three to four years, when the 2027 World Cup comes, you have to prepare your team for that. There will also be a WTC in 2027 and a T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in 2026.”
