Ananya, played by Alia Bhat, attends a wedding function for her friend Minty. The duke’s family insists on getting a big car for dowry.  So, in front of Minty and the other guests, Ananya confronts the Duke about Dowry and insults him until he becomes speechless. In Krish’s words: “Ananya meri family ke samne Bachchan ban gayi”. (Ananya became Bachchan in front of my family.)

2. Ja Simran Ji Le Apni Zindagi – Dil Wale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995)

This is perhaps the most iconic scene in Bollywood, evoking a sense of nostalgia and emotion. Kajol, playing the role of Simran, insists her father let her go to Europe for a month. Her father, representing a typical orthodox Punjabi father, initially has a straight face that leaves viewers in fear. But then he finally lets her go and live her life. He says,  “Ja Simran Ji Le Apni Zindagi”. (Go, Simran, live your life.) This scene represents a quest for freedom that, deep down, we all long for.

3. Kise Pata, Ek Baar To Hogaya Na – Thappad (2020)

In the story, Thappad, Amrita’s (played by Taapsee Pannu) apparent perfect life is shattered when her husband slaps her once during a party. She becomes dejected and comes back to her home, leaving her husband. But is one slap enough to make one wonder what a relationship is really all about? Her husband tries to convince her to return, and instead of properly apologising, he tells her that she should understand his situation. He tells her that it just happened once and won’t happen again. To which Amrita responds, “Kise Pata Ek Baar To Hogaya Na”. (Who knows? It did happen once.) This scene really sends chills down one’s spine.

4. Family Reunion – Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001)

Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham is a Bollywood classic. It is filled with emotional scenes, but the most emotional scene is when Raj meets his family after 10 years in a shopping mall. This inspirational film teaches you to love your parents unconditionally. It shows how, regardless of the mistakes they make or the abuse they inflict, parents do have a lot of love and care for us. This reunion really brings tears to our eyes. 

5. The Letter of A Desperate Child – Salaam Bombay (1988)

The plot revolves around Krishna, also known as “Chaipau”. His mother kicks him out of the house for damaging his brother’s bicycle, and he is told that he can only return if he compensates for the loss. There is a child who is lost and utterly longing to find a home. He wants to find a home, but home is impossible to return to. He tries to write a letter out of desperation, but the letter writer’s heartbreaking practicality hurts more than anything else. The writer tears the letter with a vague address of Bijapur, shattering any hopes of finding a home. 

6. Mai Bas Intezaar Kar Raha Hu – Laila Majnu (2018)

Laila Majnu is a poignant movie that shatters the viewer’s heart. This scene is particularly heartbreaking because one can sense the pain in Qais’s voice as he says I have been waiting for the last four years. He had been waiting for a time when he would finally reunite with Laila. And after all this waiting, he says he has finally reached a time when he is happy. He is lost in his crazily pleasant world, seeing Laila everywhere. Laila Majnu is a timeless classic story, and Imtiaz Ali portrays this narrative justly.
