Babar Azam Accepts Team Didn’t Play Well In T20WC But Refuses To Give Up Captaincy

The Pakistani skipper Babar Azam and the Pakistani team are getting slammed heavily as their performance in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024 has been one of the worst performances of the Pakistani side till now.

The Pakistani team couldn’t even manage to enter the Super Eight stage as they got knocked out of the group stage because of their poor performance. Pakistan’s campaign started on a disastrous note as first they lost a league match against USA which is playing in the T20 World Cup for the first time and then Pakistan lost a league match against their arch-rivals India.

The Pakistani team should have won the match against India easily as they needed to chase only 120 runs and there was a time when they needed just 47 runs in 46 balls and they had 7 wickets in hand but because of insensible batting, they fell short by 6 runs and lost the match.

Though Pakistan managed to defeat Canada and Ireland, their win was not as comfortable as it should have been. In fact, Ireland might have created an upset if they could have taken a couple of more wickets.

Babar Azam failed in making any impact with the bat and in the captaincy as well and his slow strike rate has made people more upset with him. Many former cricketers of Pakistan have demanded sacking of Babar Azam and few other cricketers but Babar Azam is in no mood of leaving captaincy.

After the match against Ireland, Babar Azam attended a press conference and he made it clear that he won’t resign because the whole team has played poor cricket and not just one person and whatever decision regarding his captaincy will be taken, it will be taken only after meeting with the PCB officials.

Babar Azam stated, “When I go back, we will discuss all the things that happened here. And if I have to leave the captaincy, this decision, I will tell you openly. I will not announce anything behind the scenes. Whatever happens, will happen in front of you. I have not thought about it. The decision is of the PCB. About the captaincy – when I had left it (after the ODI World Cup), I thought that I shouldn’t be doing it now, that’s why I left it and I announced it myself. Then when they gave it back to me, it was the decision of the PCB.”

He further added, “…everyone is sad. As a team, we did not play. I told you that we did not lose this because of one person. We are losing as a team. I am not saying this because of one person. You are pointing out that because of the captain, I cannot play in every player’s place. There are 11 players and each of them has a role. I think we as a team have not been able to apply, follow and finish things. We have to settle down and accept that we didn’t play well as a team.”
