Dolly Singh On Body Shaming and Body Positivity

Dolly Singh is a famous actress and social media influencer featured in popular movies such as ‘Double XL’, ‘Thank You for Coming’, and ‘Modern Love Mumbai’. She is quite a sensation, with 1.6M Followers on Instagram and 719k subscribers on YouTube. However, she has had her fair struggles with body shaming and insecurities.

Dolly Singh had previously opened up on her YouTube channel about the struggles she faced with being body-shamed. She discussed how she was skinny-shamed as a child and how that severely impacted her confidence and mental health. Dolly also revealed that her skinny-shaming started at home with her own parents. Hurtful comments from family, friends, and even teachers caused her emotional distress. She was called “ugly,” and that really fed into the insecurities that she carried into adulthood.

Dolly was mocked for her fashion choices, crooked teeth, and slender frame. She claimed that others would refer to her as “Bag of bones, Kaali lakdi, and Sukhi dandi.” To leave it all behind, she moved to Delhi University and graduated with a degree in Political Science. Further, she completed her Masters in Fashion Management at NIFT. It was during her masters that Dolly released her fashion blog, ‘Spill The Sass’. It was with this blog that her journey started, and she gained recognition.

A few months ago, in an interview with Bollywood Bubble, Dolly spoke out about growing up with thin-shaming. She revealed how she hated looking in the mirror, felt unattractive as a child, and refused to smile for pictures because she was self-conscious about her teeth. She said, “My teenage years were so harrowing that I didn’t take a picture. I used to hate myself so much that I have those 5-7 years where I don’t have a picture of myself because I hated looking at myself, didn’t want to capture any of it.”

Dolly recalled her childhood experiences and the hateful comments she received, which led to self-hatred and a lack of confidence. She mentioned, “So, even if you look your prettiest best, you will have insecurities because people will have made you have them”. However, she overcame her insecurities and pursued her passion for acting and content creation despite all this.

Dolly Singh has advocated body positivity on her social media accounts. A few days ago, she wrote a long, moving note, which she posted on social media with the caption, “I hope I am someone’s safe space.”. She revealed that she had lost more weight in the last few months due to “finishing up the house, adulting and stressing.”

She also added that she wasn’t concerned about it this time since she is confident that she can gradually reach her goals. To appreciate her body, she wrote, “I love my body now. I love my body in every state because it supports me. I have come to believe that and honestly, I feel proud about that. I have grown up despising my body, hating every bit of it, so this…is growth.”

When talking about safe species, Dolly admitted skipping meeting someone because she wanted to avoid their comments on her looks. She added that she has come to recognise that there aren’t many people or places in her life where she can go as she likes and always knows that she will be loved. She also revealed that her home is not one of her “safe spaces”. Ending the post with a powerful message, Dolly wrote, “If you could do something today, try to be someone’s safe space. And count your own blessings from people in your life who don’t care about the kgs fluctuating but the smiles on your face”.

There has been a lot of love and respect for her piece of writing. Her message of body positivity has been well received, and many have expressed their hardships in the comments.  Additionally, many have thanked Dolly for sharing her honest and raw story of her challenges, which many people have been able to relate to.
