Nearly ten years after her unforgettable appearance on Koffee With Karan, Kangana has revisited that moment, one that shocked Karan Johar and sparked a nationwide debate about nepotism in Bollywood.

In a recent interview, Kangana Ranaut was asked whether her bold remarks on the show were planned or spontaneous. Her answer revealed a deeper emotional journey shaped by years of personal experiences.

She explained that there comes a point in life when people try to fit in, but there is also a phase where standing out becomes inevitable. According to Kangana, once you are already different, there is no point pretending to belong. She shared that before the famous episode, she had faced mockery on the same platform about her clothes, her English and even her presence were criticised. She also mentioned working with the same people in a film where she felt sidelined with an insignificant role.

These repeated experiences built up over time. Initially, Kangana Ranaut believed in adjusting and maintaining harmony with others. However, when the effort felt one-sided, her perspective changed. She realised her success was not dependent on their approval. In fact, she felt that if given the chance, some people would completely erase her existence in the industry through negative publicity, legal cases and group targeting.

That is why, she said, she chose honesty over pretense. She questioned why she should pretend or make others look good when she herself was being treated unfairly.

When asked about nepotism and whether she was up against a “boys’ club”, Kangana Ranaut agreed strongly. She described the environment as one where multiple groups came together against her. She also referred to personal legal battles including the cases filed by her Ex and how they added to the negativity surrounding her.

More shockingly, she recalled being labeled with extreme accusations, being called a “witch” and targeted with bizarre rumours. She described this phase as a clear case of “witch-hunting”, emphasising that she was only 26–27 years old at the time, dealing with intense pressure and isolation.

Looking back today, Kangana Ranaut says she has no regrets. She believes she handled the situation in the best way she could at that age and under those circumstances. For her, it was about self-respect and refusing to support those who, in her view, were trying to bring her down.

The original moment dates back to February 2017, when she appeared on the show alongside Saif Ali Khan to promote the film Rangoon. What was meant to be a promotional appearance turned into a defining cultural moment.

During the episode, Kangana Ranaut openly called Karan Johar the “flag bearer of nepotism”. She even joked that if her biopic were ever made, he would play the role of a stereotypical Bollywood insider, arrogant and dismissive of outsiders. She added that she liked him as the antagonist in her story.

That statement didn’t just create headlines, it started a larger conversation about privilege, access and fairness in the Hindi film industry. Even today, that moment continues to be referenced whenever discussions around nepotism arise.
