Where Is Ishan Kishan? Did BCCI Forget Him? 6 Players BCCI Didn’t Even Consider For Zimbabwe Tour
The young Indian team led by Shubman Gill is on a tour to Zimababwe where they will play five T20I matches starting from 6 July but after the Indian side lost the first T20I, there were some who questioned the absence of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer from the squad especially when they were not a part of India’s T20 World Cup 2024 squad as well.
There is no denying the fact that the presence of Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer would have strengthened the team as both of them are pretty experienced cricketers.
After Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja announced their retirement from the T20I format, it was quite obvious that the selectors would look forward to select a young team but ignoring Ishan Kishan hasn’t gone well with many.
If we go back to 2023, then in the absence of Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan was slowly taking over as the first choice wicketkeeper and he was looking certain for the T20 World Cup 2024. Moreover, what was going in his favor was the fact that he is a left-hander and can bat at any number.
But after the ODI World Cup 2023, Ishan Kishan got to play only 3 T20Is out of 11 and despite scoring back to back half-centuries, he was falling behind as Jitesh Sharma was emerging as front runner for the position of the wicketkeeper.
A little later, Ishan Kishan took a break citing mental fatigue and since then, he hasn’t returned to international cricket. He was asked by the BCCI to play for Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy but he chose to ignore the instructions and the board members got infuriated when he was seen practicing with Hardik Pandya for the upcoming IPL season.
As a result, Ishan Kishan was dropped from the list of the players who got the annual contracts. After that, he was snubbed from the T20 World Cup 2024 squad and now he wasn’t even considered for the Zimbabwe tour.
Though India lost the first T20I against Zimbabwe which was played on 6 July at Harare Sports Stadium, three players- Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shivam Dube will be available for the third T20I and it will certainly make the team stronger.
As far as Shreyas Iyer is concerned, there was time when he was groomed as the future skipper but his poor form and injuries made him lose his place in the team and when the BCCI asked him to play in domestic cricket, he cited back issues but the medical experts at NCA claimed that he is completely fit and this made the board angry with him. Though Kolkata Knight Riders won their second IPL trophy under his leadership in this season, still he wasn’t considered for the Zimbabwe tour.
It is not just that Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer have been snubbed by the board, there are some other players as well. For example, KKR bowler Varun Chakaravarthy was the second highest wicket-taker of the IPL 2024 with 21 wickets but he was not called for the Zimbabwe tour.
The pace sensation Mayank Yadav who played for Lucknow Super Giants was also not considered despite his good performance in the IPL 2024 and another pacer who created a storm with his raw pace, Umran Malik also failed in finding a place in the Indian team. Umran Malik played last for India in Feb 2023 in home series against New Zealand and since then, he hasn’t played any international cricket.
Yash Dayal and Sandeep Sharma are other two names who didn’t get the chance to tour Zimbabwe despite performing well in the IPL 2024. Yash Dayal plays for RCB and he took 15 wickets in 14 matches and Sandeep Sharma who plays for Rajasthan Royals took 13 wickets in 11 matches.
Let’s see when these players will get a chance to play for India.
