Gujarat Titans ended Rajasthan Royals’ IPL 2026 campaign with a win in Qualifier 2 at Mullanpur in New Chandigarh, but the night also belonged to 15 years old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi who produced another remarkable innings and broke several records along the way.

Coming into the knockout clash, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was already enjoying a sensational season and he added more milestones to his growing list of achievements despite Rajasthan’s defeat.

The young opener became the fastest batter in IPL history to reach 1,000 runs in terms of balls faced. Having made his IPL debut in 2025, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi reached the landmark in just 440 deliveries, breaking the previous world record held by Andre Russell who completed 1,000 IPL runs in 545 balls.

He also became the fastest Indian to score 1,000 IPL runs in terms of innings, reaching the mark in only 23 innings. Overall, he is now the joint second-fastest batter to achieve the feat, behind Shaun Marsh, who took 21 innings. The previous Indian record belonged to Gujarat Titans batter B Sai Sudharsan who reached the milestone in his 25th innings.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi also rewrote T20 history by setting the record for the most boundaries — fours and sixes combined — in a single T20 tournament. He needed nine boundaries to surpass Jos Buttler’s tally of 128 and achieved the feat when he struck his ninth boundary on the first ball of the 14th over. At that stage, he was batting on 56 from 32 deliveries.

Rajasthan’s innings began poorly as they slipped to 9/2 in the second over. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi then steadied the innings alongside Ravindra Jadeja before the all-rounder suffered an injury and had to retire out. The teenager later added important runs with captain Riyan Parag but Rajasthan continued to lose wickets and found themselves at 118/5 in the 13th over.

Jadeja returned to the crease and the pair added 54 runs for the sixth wicket, putting Rajasthan back in the contest. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi looked set for his second IPL century of the season before falling victim to nerves in the 90s. Attempting to attack a short-pitched delivery from Kagiso Rabada, he was caught by Prasidh Krishna at long-on for 96 off 47 balls.

The dismissal placed him in an unwanted IPL record book. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi became only the second batter after Glenn Maxwell in the IPL 2014 to be dismissed three times in the nervous 90s. He also joined David Warner, KL Rahul and Maxwell among the players with the most dismissals in the 90s in IPL history.

The innings took his season tally to 775 runs, the fifth-highest in a single IPL edition behind Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Jos Buttler and Warner. He also set another playoff record, smashing 19 sixes in just two matches, surpassing the previous mark of 11 shared by Wriddhiman Saha in 2014 and Gill in 2023.

While Gujarat Titans celebrated a place in the final, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi ensured that Qualifier 2 would be remembered as another landmark chapter in his extraordinary rise.
