Ruturaj Gaikwad Registers Unwanted Record, Becomes 1st Skipper In IPL History To….

Chennai Super Kings skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad found himself on the wrong side of the IPL history after his cautious innings against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk on Monday.

Ruturaj Gaikwad scored 15 runs off 21 balls without hitting a single boundary or six before getting dismissed. With that knock, he became the first captain in the history of the league to open the batting, face more than 20 deliveries and fail to score a boundary throughout the innings.

A few other IPL openers have previously recorded similar innings without boundaries, including David Warner, Manish Pandey, Shikhar Dhawan, Michael Hussey, Chris Gayle and Manvinder Bisla. Several captains have also done it in the past, including Steven Smith, MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, Axar Patel and Aiden Markram. However, none of them achieved the unwanted milestone while opening the innings as captain.

The innings has sparked criticism mainly because of how modern T20 cricket is played today. Teams now rely heavily on aggressive batting during the powerplay overs, where fielding restrictions offer the best scoring opportunities. An opener batting over 20 balls at a strike rate of just 71.42 is seen as a major setback, especially in a high-scoring tournament like the IPL.

While the Chepauk pitch was not considered easy for batting, other batters managed to score quickly in the same match. Sanju Samson and Urvil Patel attacked during the powerplay and maintained strike rates above 160, showing that quick scoring was still possible.

Ruturaj Gaikwad’s overall form has also become a concern for CSK. His strike rate this season stands at 124.60, currently the lowest among regular batters in the IPL 2026. Since he is also leading the side, questions are now being raised about both his batting intent and the team’s overall approach.

CSK coach Stephen Fleming hinted during the mid-innings break that the team still values having one batter stay till the end of the innings. However, many fans and analysts believe that strategy no longer fits the fast-paced nature of modern T20 cricket.

Ruturaj Gaikwad will definitely like to forget this innings for forever.
