Saif Ali Khan Reveals How He Got The Iconic Role Of Langda Tyagi In Omkara

Saif Ali Khan’s latest release Kartavya, now streaming on an OTT platform, has once again sparked conversations about his versatility as an actor. In the film, Saif plays a cop with a strong Haryanvi accent, a performance that reminded many viewers of his unforgettable portrayal of Langda Tyagi in Omkara. Known for playing stylish, urban characters for most of his career, Saif Ali Khan says roles that push him out of that image are still rare.

In a recent interview, the actor admitted that he often had to persuade filmmakers to trust him with more layered and serious characters. According to Saif Ali Khan, the industry had long viewed him as someone suited mainly for light-hearted romantic roles and sophisticated city-based characters.

He shared that getting cast in Parineeta was far from easy. Veteran producer Vidhu Vinod Chopra initially had another actor in mind for the role of Shekhar in the Pradeep Sarkar directorial. Saif recalled that Vidhu Vinod Chopra believed the other actor carried emotional pain because his career had not worked out as expected, while Saif Ali Khan did not seem to have that struggle in his personality.

The actor said he jokingly questioned the idea that failure should be a requirement for landing a role. He also mentioned that Vidhu Vinod Chopra considered him too “rom-com” for the character. Saif then personally spoke to the producer and tried convincing him that he could handle the emotional depth required for Shekhar. Eventually, he succeeded in winning the part.

Saif Ali Khan also revealed that Parineeta was not the only film where he had to fight for a role. He said that he had similar conversations with the makers of Ek Hasina Thi before finally being cast. The actor further shared an interesting detail about Race. Initially, the filmmakers wanted him to play the role that eventually went to Akshaye Khanna. However, Saif pushed to portray the elder brother instead, believing the character had greater responsibility and depth.

Reflecting on those years, Saif Ali Khan explained that his success in romantic comedies and lighter entertainers made it difficult for directors to imagine him in darker or more serious parts. Casting him in such roles required filmmakers to take what he called a “leap of faith”.

However, Saif Ali Khan believes that his iconic role of Langda Tyagi in Omkara was different. He credited director Vishal Bhardwaj entirely for envisioning him in the role. The actor admitted that he himself would never have imagined playing such a raw and rustic character and would never have asked for it on his own.

Even today, Saif Ali Khan says that intense, calm and emotionally layered roles are not the kind filmmakers usually approach him with, making performances like Omkara and Kartavya even more special in his career.
