Shaheen Afridi Fined PKR 1 Million Over Forcefully Escorting Visitors In Hotel Controversy

A recent incident involving Shaheen Afridi has brought unexpected attention to off-field discipline in the Pakistan Super League. The star fast bowler has been fined PKR 1 million, which is roughly USD 3600, by his franchise Lahore Qalandars after allegedly breaking security rules at the team hotel.

The issue came to light after reports from Punjab Police claimed that Shaheen Afridi, along with teammate Sikandar Raza, allowed four visitors into the team hotel despite being denied permission. According to the police, the players had requested approval to bring guests but their request was rejected due to strict security protocols in place during the tournament. Despite this, the visitors were reportedly taken to the players’ room and stayed there for a few hours.

In response, Lahore Qalandars took disciplinary action and imposed a fine on Shaheen Afridi. The franchise stated that the decision was made to maintain discipline within the team and ensure accountability. They also confirmed that they have shared a detailed explanation of the situation with the Pakistan Cricket Board, including their observations on what happened.

At the same time, the franchise made it clear that they respect the work of security personnel and understand the importance of maintaining a safe environment for everyone involved, including players, officials and fans. They suggested that the situation may have been the result of a misunderstanding rather than an intentional attempt to break the rules but still emphasised their commitment to following all established procedures.

Interestingly, Sikandar Raza publicly took responsibility for the incident and defended Shaheen Afridi. He explained that the visitors were his own friends and family and Shaheen Afridi had only helped him bring them to the room at his request. Sikandar Raza admitted that neither he nor Shaheen Afridi were fully aware of the rules and accepted that the mistake was his. He also clarified that Shaheen Afridi did not force anyone or act on his own but simply supported a teammate who wanted to meet close family members in a more private setting instead of a public area.

The incident highlights how even small lapses in following rules can lead to serious consequences in high-profile tournaments like the PSL. While the situation may not have been intentional, it serves as a reminder of how important it is for players to stay aware of regulations, especially when security is involved.
