“I Am Neither Tired Nor….,” Mohammed Shami Breaks Silence On His Retirement Talks

Uncertainty may surround his international future but Mohammed Shami is far from thinking about calling it a day. The experienced fast bowler has made it clear that retirement is not on his mind, even as questions continue to grow about his absence from the Indian team.

It has been more than a year since Shami last played for India. Even though he is fully fit and performing well, he has not been able to make a comeback. The reasons behind his continued absence are still unclear, with decisions believed to rest with the BCCI and chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

In domestic cricket, Mohammed Shami has done everything possible to stay in contention. Representing Bengal in the 2025-26 season, he delivered outstanding performances across tournaments like Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, picking up an impressive 67 wickets. Despite this, he has not been included in India’s plans, leading to speculation that the team might be moving on to younger players.

Mohammed Shami was also in consideration for major assignments like the Border-Gavaskar Trophy and the England tour. However, he chose to step back from both to focus on recovering from a foot injury. There were also reports of a disagreement with Ajit Agarkar over communication but that did not change his situation, as he continues to remain out of the national setup.

Now playing for Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL 2026, Mohammed Shami spoke openly about his mindset. He explained that thinking about retirement can negatively affect a player. According to him, such thoughts usually come when someone feels mentally or physically exhausted. He believes that losing motivation or interest is the real sign to step away from the game.

For now, Shami says he feels neither tired nor bored. He is still enjoying cricket and is satisfied with his performances. That passion, he believes, is what keeps him going.

After a difficult stint with Sunrisers Hyderabad where he managed only six wickets in nine matches last season, Mohammed Shami is looking at the IPL 2026 as a fresh start. With renewed focus, he is determined to give his best for Lucknow Super Giants.

He knows that not everything is in his control but he remains committed to giving full effort on the field. His focus is on fulfilling his role as a bowler and meeting expectations through hard work and determination.
