“I Was Traumatised,” Farah Khan Reveals Akshaye Khanna Was Not Nice On Set, Used To Throw Things

Years before social media clips turned his scenes into viral comedy gold, actor Akshaye Khanna had a very different reputation behind the scenes, at least according to filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan.

The director recently looked back at her early experiences working with Akshaye Khanna in the 1990s and admitted that those collaborations were far from pleasant. In recent times, Akshaye Khanna is again getting attention from audiences after appearing in Dhurandhar, directed by Aditya Dhar. His renewed popularity has also pushed fans to revisit his quirky and over-the-top performance in Farah Khan’s 2010 comedy Tees Maar Khan.

Although the film didn’t perform well at the box office when it first released, it has slowly built a cult following online. Many of Akshaye Khanna’s scenes from the movie frequently circulate on social media, with viewers praising his comic timing.

However, Farah Khan recently revealed that working with the actor in the early days wasn’t easy. During a podcast conversation, she shared that in the 1990s, she worked with Akshaye Khanna on a couple of films and those experiences left her traumatised. At the time, she felt he behaved quite differently on set, he was very introvert and often difficult to work with. Because of that, whenever she later heard that Akshaye Khanna was part of a film project, she would try to avoid it by saying she didn’t have dates.

Farah Khan also explained that Akshaye Khanna was going through a personal struggle during that phase of his career. According to her, he had spoken openly about dealing with hair loss and she believes that insecurity may have made him more irritable at the time. She recalled that he sometimes reacted strongly to things on set, getting frustrated with dialogues and occasionally throwing items in irritation.

Despite those early experiences, Farah Khan said her perception of the actor changed completely when they worked together on Dil Chahta Hai, the directorial debut of her cousin Farhan Akhtar. The film also starred Aamir Khan and Saif Ali Khan.

Farah Khan admitted she could not turn down the project, even though Akshaye Khanna was in the cast. But once filming began, she noticed that he had changed significantly. He seemed far more relaxed and comfortable, especially after coming to terms with his hair loss. She also pointed out that earlier in his career, he would often wear caps in scenes involving rain or water, something audiences might notice in songs from films like Taal.

Finally, Farah Khan highlighted a talent of Akshaye Khanna that she believes many people overlook, i.e., his dancing ability. She said that if viewers watch the song Koi Kahe Kehta Rahe from Dil Chahta Hai, they might notice that Akshaye Khanna danced better than Aamir Khan and Saif Ali Khan.

Well, hair loss is unbearable for even a common man so it is quite understandable how frustrating it would have been for an actor.
