The England cricket team’s disappointing Ashes campaign didn’t just expose issues on the field, it also brought hidden tensions within the team setup into the spotlight.

According to reports, England captain Ben Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum privately expressed frustration with each other during the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) review after the series. England had suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat in Australia, a tour filled with both poor performances and off-field controversies.

The series also drew criticism over a relaxed team culture, including reports of excessive drinking and a casual approach that didn’t match the demands of high-level Test cricket. At the time, Ben Stokes admitted that rival teams had figured out how to counter England’s aggressive “Bazball” strategy.

Behind closed doors, however, things were more complicated. Brendon McCullum reportedly felt that Ben Stokes was not always consistent in following the team’s playing philosophy, which led to confusion within the squad. He believed that mixed signals from leadership affected the team’s identity during crucial moments. On the other hand, Ben Stokes also questioned certain decisions made by the coaching staff during the series.

Despite these disagreements, the situation was not seen as serious fallout but rather a difference in opinions between two strong-minded leaders. Both eventually agreed to move forward together, with Brendon McCullum keeping his role, potentially until his contract runs through the 2027 ODI World Cup.

However some changes are now being made. Brendon McCullum has accepted more structured oversight from the board, while performance director Ed Barney will have a bigger role. England is also strengthening its support staff and focusing more on fitness after concerned players were not fully prepared for Australia’s tough conditions.

A positive sign came in the 2026 T20 World Cup, where England reached the semi-finals before narrowly losing to India, suggesting the team may be back on track.
