Sunil Gavaskar Takes A Jibe At Pakistan & Reveals Why They May Reverse Their Forfeit Decision

The build-up to the ICC T20 World Cup took another dramatic turn as Pakistan finally put an end to doubts over their participation in the tournament, only to spark a fresh controversy, few moments later. In a surprise move, Pakistan announced they would forfeit their highly anticipated group-stage match against India, a decision that has already sent shockwaves through the cricketing world.

The announcement came directly from the Pakistani government through social media, without offering any explanation for the move. While the message confirmed Pakistan’s presence in the tournament, the silence around the reasoning behind skipping the India clash has raised eyebrows across the boards and fan bases.

The ICC has taken note of the situation and has reportedly cautioned the Pakistan Cricket Board about the long-term consequences of sticking with this decision. Former India captain and batting great Sunil Gavaskar also weighed in, taking a subtle dig at Pakistan by recalling their history of sudden reversals in major decisions.

Speaking on a news channel, Sunil Gavaskar suggested that this may not be the final word on the matter. He hinted that Pakistan has often changed course in the past, especially when public reaction grows louder. According to him, just like some famous Pakistani cricketers who have returned from retirements citing fan demand and public pressure, Pakistan may also reverse their decision citing fan demand before the February 15 deadline.

For now, India will follow protocol and travel to Sri Lanka for the match. As per ICC rules, a walkover can only be awarded if one team fails to appear for the toss. That means India T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav will walk out for the toss at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on February 15. If Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha does not show up, the match referee will officially hand India a walkover and two crucial points.

Meanwhile, uncertainty remains over whether the PCB supports the government’s stance. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi is expected to address the media soon. Sources quoted by PTI suggest the key question will be whether the decision was entirely governmental or taken with the board’s consent and what official reason is presented for denying permission to play India.
