According to information shared by a news agency, the ICC has warned that refusing to play India could lead to serious consequences, including financial penalties and potential legal action from broadcasters. Broadcasters stand to incur significant losses if one of the most-watched fixtures of the tournament does not take place.
Sources within the PCB have indicated that any attempt to challenge the matter through the ICC’s dispute resolution mechanisms may not yield favourable results. The financial and legal risks, they believe, are substantial if Pakistan chooses to stay away from the match.
Another point highlighted by sources familiar with the situation is that India has not blocked matches against Pakistan at neutral venues in the past. Even though the Indian government does not allow its team to tour Pakistan, it has permitted India-Pakistan matches in ICC events and Asia Cups held outside both countries, including after recent tensions in May. With Pakistan already set to play its matches at a neutral venue Sri Lanka, the issue could further complicate matters for the PCB.
As India sharpens its focus on cricketing goals under Gautam Gambhir’s leadership, the fate of the tournament’s biggest rivalry remains uncertain.
