Varun Chakravarthy Says Every Player Should Play In SMAT & Reason Is Connected With IPL

Varun Chakravarthy, the star Indian spinner, played a crucial role in India’s victory in the first T20I of the five-match series against England in Kolkata, taking three wickets for 23 runs in four overs.

Reflecting on his performance, Varun emphasised the high quality of domestic cricket in India and expressed his belief that tournaments like the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) are instrumental for cricketers. The 33 years old cricketer, who represents Tamil Nadu in domestic cricket, compared the standard of domestic cricket to the Indian Premier League (IPL) and international matches, highlighting its competitive nature.

Varun shared that playing in the SMAT is particularly challenging due to the smaller grounds, which require players to be sharp, instinctive and quick in their decision-making and he suggested that every player should play in the SMAT in order to get benefitted. He credited the tournament for helping him develop these skills, which have been vital in his career. This year, he performed impressively in domestic cricket, taking nine wickets in the SMAT and 18 wickets in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

As the series shifts to Chennai for the second T20I, Varun expressed excitement about playing at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, his home ground, for the first time while representing India. He described it as a special moment to play in front of his parents and the local crowd, marking it as a significant milestone in his career.

Discussing his role in the Indian team, Varun said that his focus is on being aggressive, bowling bravely, and targeting the stumps consistently. He credited team leaders – head coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Suryakumar Yadav for creating a supportive environment, ensuring players remain free from external pressure and distractions.
