Here’s All You Need To Know About The New BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia Who Has Replaced Jay Shah

Devajit Saikia was elected unopposed as the new secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Sunday, January 12. An advocate by profession, Devajit Saikia has a background in cricket, having played in the Ranji Trophy for Assam as a wicketkeeper-batter. He previously served as the secretary of the Assam Cricket Association. The 55-year-old succeeded Jay Shah, who took charge of the ICC on December 1, 2024.

According to a report, Devajit Saikia will hold the position of the BCCI secretary for the next ten months, until the next round of office-bearer elections. He made his Ranji Trophy debut for Assam in 1991, playing four matches as a wicketkeeper and middle-order batter before retiring from cricket at 21 to focus on academics.

A classmate of Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Devajit Saikia was appointed senior standing counsel of the state in 2019, representing the Assam government in both the High Court and the Supreme Court. Besides his involvement in cricket, he also plays a role in the administration of other sports bodies, serving as the secretary of the 115-year-old Guwahati Town Club and Guwahati Sports.

The Assam Cricket Association (ACA) welcomed Devajit Saikia’s election as the BCCI secretary, expressing confidence that his experience will contribute positively to the promotion of cricket in the country. Devajit Saikia, who also serves as the advocate general of Assam, has held the position of vice president of the ACA from 2016 to 2019 and was its secretary from 2019 to 2022.
