2 French Cyclists Relied On Google Maps For Travelling To Nepal From Delhi, Ended Up In Bareilly

Google Maps has recently come under scrutiny in India due to several incidents in which it has mis-directed the travelers and caused significant confusion. The app, which millions rely on for navigation, has turned out to be incorrect on quite few occasions, sparking frustration and inconvenience. A recent incident involving two French tourists highlighted the gravity of these errors, showcasing how reliance on technology can sometimes go awry.

Brian Jacques Gilbert and Sebastian Francois Gabriel, two French nationals, were cycling from Delhi to Kathmandu but found themselves lost near Churaili Dam in Uttar Pradesh late at night. The tourists, who had arrived in Delhi on January 7, had planned to cross into Nepal via Tanakpur in Pilibhit. However, misled by Google Maps in the dark, they ended up taking an unplanned detour through Baheri in Bareilly, far from their intended path.

The villagers spotted the two cycling on a deserted road near the dam at 11 p.m. on Thursday. Unable to communicate with the tourists due to the language barrier and concerned for their safety, the locals escorted them to the nearby Churaili police outpost. The police, in turn, arranged for the travelers to stay overnight at the village Pradhan’s house.

Circle Officer Arun Kumar Singh confirmed the mix-up, explaining that Google Maps had directed the cyclists to an unfamiliar shortcut, which caused them to lose their way. When Senior Superintendent of Police Anurag Arya was informed, he ensured that the tourists were guided back to their route with proper instructions to prevent further confusion.

This incident serves as a reminder of the limitations of navigation apps and the importance of verifying routes, especially in remote or less-mapped areas. While technology often simplifies traveling, local knowledge and alternative planning remain invaluable, particularly for international visitors unfamiliar with the terrain.
