Upasana Singh Reveals A South Director Asked Her To Compromise For Working In Anil Kapoor’s Movie
We have come across many incidents of casting couch and s*xual harassment in the movie industry and the truth is that such incidents have been taking place for a long time but we are getting to know about them in the present time because of the strength that social media has provided to all of us.
Actress Upasana Singh, known for her roles in films like “Judwaa” and “Main Prem Ki Diwani Hoon” as well as her appearances on Comedy Nights with Kapil, recently opened up about a distressing incident from her early career. She recounted an uncomfortable experience with a South Indian film director who invited her to a late night meeting under misleading pretenses. The incident left a lasting impact on her, pushing her into isolation for a week as she grappled with its emotional toll.
In an interview, Upasana shared that the director, who was significantly older, had signed her for a film opposite Anil Kapoor. She recalled that she would always bring her mother or sister to meetings with him. One day, the director questioned why she never came alone. Later that night, he called her at 11:30 PM, asking her to meet him at a hotel in Juhu for what he described as a “sitting”. She declined, suggesting they discuss the script the following day instead, citing that she lacked transportation. However, his insistence and suggestive tone revealed his true intentions, leaving her deeply uncomfortable.
The incident weighed heavily on her mind and the following morning, she decided to confront him at his office in Bandra. She arrived while the director was in a meeting with several others. Ignoring his secretary’s instructions to wait, she barged into the room and confronted him in front of everyone, expressing her outrage in Punjabi. Despite her bold response, she left his office feeling shaken, particularly because she had already informed many people that she is doing a movie with Anil Kapoor. Overwhelmed, she found herself walking aimlessly, crying on the streets.
Reflecting on the aftermath, Upasana explained that the experience was so upsetting that she locked herself in her room for seven days, crying incessantly and worrying about what others would think. However, those seven days became a turning point. Drawing strength from the sacrifices her mother had made for her career, she resolved not to let the incident defeat her. Determined to succeed on her own terms, she decided to stay in the film industry, emerging stronger and more resilient from the ordeal.
Every woman should courageously face such people who are trying to harass them, in fact they should ensure that such person is punished by law.
