Sunil Gavaskar Lauds India’s Approach As KL Rahul Chooses Win Despite Shubman Gill Close To Ton
India’s convincing victory over Afghanistan in the rain-affected opening ODI at Dharamshala was about more than just the final result. According to legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar, the match highlighted a key strength of the current Indian side, their commitment to putting the team’s success ahead of individual achievements.
India secured a seven-wicket win in the first match of the three-game series, taking a 1-0 lead. With the contest reduced to 25 overs per side due to rain, the chase presented a challenging task. However, India made the pursuit look remarkably straightforward, finishing the job in the 23rd over.
Sunil Gavaskar pointed to KL Rahul’s approach during the chase as a perfect example of the team-first mentality that is driving India’s success. At one stage, Afghanistan pacer Zia Ur Rahman had delivered three economical overs, conceding only 19 runs. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill was just 21 runs away from reaching a century and India still required around 30 runs to secure victory by chasing the target of 195.
Instead of slowing down to allow Shubman Gill to reach the milestone, Rahul shifted gears and attacked. He scored 20 runs in a single over from Zia Ur Rahman, effectively putting the match beyond Afghanistan’s reach.
For Sunil Gavaskar, that moment reflected the mindset of the entire squad. He noted that the players are focused on winning matches rather than chasing personal records. The fact that India completed the chase with two overs to spare demonstrated just how clinical and efficient their batting performance was. Despite facing a demanding target, the team made it appear far easier than it actually was.
Sunil Gavaskar also praised India’s bowling resources, particularly all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy. He highlighted how Nitish Kumar Reddy’s ability to contribute as either a batter or a bowler gives the captain and selectors valuable flexibility. Whether used as a fifth or sixth bowling option, his versatility adds important balance to the team.

Another player who impressed Gavaskar was debutant fast bowler Gurnoor Brar. Gavaskar praised his pace, control and ability to generate movement off the pitch. He noted that Gurnoor Brar’s opening delivery, clocked in the mid-140 kmph range and moving away from the right-hander, showcased the qualities that make him an exciting prospect for the future.
With both established stars and emerging talents stepping up, India’s strong start to the series underlined the depth and unity within the squad.
