Speaking in a recent interview, Karisma Kapoor revealed that many actresses were reluctant to take on the role because they did not want to be compared to or compete with Madhuri Dixit, who was already considered one of the finest dancers of Bollywood. Looking back, the actress said the character of Nisha was unlike the typical Bollywood heroine of that era. Karisma felt that portraying the heartbreak, vulnerability and emotional struggle of a woman facing rejection made the role unique and rewarding.

Directed by legendary filmmaker Yash Chopra, the film followed the lives and relationships of members of a musical troupe. The story centered on two dancers who found themselves caught in a love triangle involving their choreographer.

The film went on to become a massive box-office success and emerged as the highest-grossing Bollywood movie of 1997. It also dominated award ceremonies, winning three National Awards, seven Filmfare Awards, along with several other honors.
