“We Judge Talent Wrong”, Rahul Dravid Gives His Honest Take On Vinod Kambli’s Failure
The former Indian cricketer Vinod Kambli and his poor health condition is currently among the most talked about topics as the Indian fans are quite upset after seeing him in an event which was also attended by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar.
Currently, an old video featuring the former India captain and head coach Rahul Dravid is going viral on social media. In the clip, Dravid shares his perspective on the careers of Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli, highlighting what made Tendulkar stand out beyond his batting talent.
Both Vinod Kambli and Sachin Tendulkar, childhood friends and school cricket sensations, made their way to the Indian national team. While Sachin debuted at just 16 years of age, Kambli made his debut three years later in 1991. Despite his promising start, Kambli’s international career spanned only 104 ODIs and 17 Tests.
In the video, Dravid points out that talent often gets reduced to visible skills like ball-striking but insists that other intangible qualities are equally crucial. Using Kambli as an example, Rahul Dravid remarked, “I think we judge talent wrong. What do we see as talent? I made the same mistake myself. We judge talent by people’s ability to strike a cricket ball, the sweetness or the timing of hitting the ball. That’s the only thing we see as pure talent. Things like determination, courage, discipline, and temperament, are also talents. I think when we judge we got to look at the whole package.”
In contrast, Tendulkar’s illustrious career saw him becoming one of the greatest cricketers of all time. Dravid suggested that Sachin’s success stemmed from a combination of talent and intangible qualities like determination, discipline, ability to adapt, etc.
Rahul Dravid further said, “I hate to use this, but Vinod (Kambli) has probably been one of the nicest guys. Vinod had an incredible ball-striking ability. I remember after had the game in Ludhiana we played in Rajkot. Vinod got 150 in that game against (Javagal) Srinath, and Anil (Kumble). It was incredible, first ball Anil came to bowl, he hit him straight onto the wall. But maybe he didn’t have the talent in the other areas, of just understanding what it took to being an international cricketer or dealing with the stress and the pressure. Maybe Sachin had that much more and that’s why he is where he is today.”

Reflecting on Sachin Tendulkar’s journey, Rahul Dravid emphasised that Sachin was more than just his technical prowess. His discipline, determination and mental strength contributed significantly to his legendary status, setting an example for aspiring cricketers.
This resurfaced video has sparked discussions about what it takes to achieve greatness in cricket and the fine balance between raw talent and essential non-tangible traits.
If Rahul Dravid is saying this, he must be correct, what do you say?
