Aussie Legend Surprised As Indian Team Did Not Bring Chahal Or Kuldeep For BGT
The Indian cricket team is currently playing the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia and out of 5 test matches, 3 have been played and the series is levelled at 1-1 with both the teams winning one match each while one match has ended in a draw.
India’s decision not to include a wrist-spinner in their squad for the ongoing tour of Australia has surprised legendary cricketer Allan Border.
The original squad for the five-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which began last month, included three specialist spinners: Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar. However, with Ashwin’s recent retirement and no replacement announced, India is now left with just two spinners for the rest of the series.
Allan Border, who captained Australia in 92 Tests, believes India missed an opportunity to include either Kuldeep Yadav or Yuzvendra Chahal in the squad. He pointed out that the lasting impact of Shane Warne on leg-spin bowling has influenced modern captains who often expect leg-spinners to emulate Warne’s extraordinary success.
Kuldeep Yadav is currently sidelined with a groin issue, while Yuzvendra Chahal has not been considered for India’s Test setup. While speaking to a leading publication, he said that he is surprised the Indian team hasn’t brought Chahal or Kuldeep. He added that developing a leg-spinner is a tough task and legendary Shane Warne doesn’t come along every day. He added that captains today don’t manage leg-spinners effectively.
Allan Border explained that leg-spinners often deliver loose balls, such as full tosses or short deliveries, which can be costly. Modern captains, he observed, tend to be defensive, demanding immediate success rather than allowing a wrist-spinner time to develop.
Allan Border said that the modern skippers want their spinners to attack like Shane Warne but a leg-spinner needs protection from the captain because they won’t be getting wickets always with catches at slip or bat-pat catches.
He emphasised that Shane Warne’s accuracy and ability to spin the ball made him a rare talent, setting a standard that is difficult to match. “Finger spinners focus on containment, waiting for batsmen to make mistakes. Leggies, by nature, can be loose. Warne’s precision and skill made him exceptional, which shows how hard it is to master leg-spin,” Border explained.
Allan Border further explained that the focus of finger spinner is on containment as they wait forth batters to make mistakes but leg-spinners are loose because of their nature. As per him, what made Warne special were his skill and precision and it also shows how difficult it is to master leg-spin.
