Children More Aware of Smartphone Impact Than Parents, 8 in 10 Advocate for Parental Controls: vivo Survey
In an era where technology was envisioned to bring people closer, the reality paints a different picture. The overuse of smartphones, while connecting us virtually, is creating emotional and relational distances within families. This paradox underscores the responsibility of brands like vivo to raise awareness about the need for mindful smartphone usage.
A recent survey by vivo, in collaboration with CyberMedia Research (CMR), sheds light on how excessive smartphone usage is straining parent-child relationships in India. Parents were found to spend over five hours daily on their smartphones, while children averaged more than four hours. This has led to 66% of parents and 56% of children noticing negative changes in their relationships. Furthermore, 73% of parents and 69% of children acknowledged conflicts stemming from device overuse.
Interestingly, children were found to be more conscious of the adverse effects of smartphones. About 64% of children reported feeling addicted to their devices, while 80% advocated for parental controls on their parents’ smartphone use. Additionally, nearly 90% of children expressed skepticism about the invention of popular social media apps.
These findings stress the importance of fostering balanced digital habits and nurturing more meaningful family interactions that go beyond screens.
About the Campaign Film
The campaign film tells the poignant story of a child who decides to dress up as a mobile phone for a school fancy dress competition. When asked why, the child innocently explains that it’s the only way to get his father’s attention. This tender moment reveals the emotional cost of excessive smartphone usage, highlighting how it leaves parents with little time for those who need it the most – their children.
In a powerful conclusion, the father switches off his phone, driving home the campaign’s core message: disconnect to reconnect.
