List Of The Indian Cricketers Who Played The 2011 World Cup Final & What They Are Doing Now

India is hosting the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 after 12 years and because MS Dhoni-led team won the ICC ODI World Cup 2011, hopes are pretty high this time and fans are expecting Rohit Sharma-led team to win this World Cup and end the 10-year drought of the ICC trophy.

Rohit Sharma has certainly come a long way in his career as he was excluded from the 2011 World Cup squad and now he is leading the team into the big and prestigious event. Initially, Virat Kohli was the only one cricketer from the 2011 WC squad who is also the part of the 2023 WC squad but after the last minute inclusion of Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, now we have two cricketers from the 2011 WC team in the 2023 WC team too. R Ashwin played only 2 matches in the 2011 WC, let’s see how many matches he will play in this World Cup.

Today we will tell you about the Indian cricketers who played the 2011 World Cup final and where they are now:

1. Virender Sehwag:

The former Indian cricketer who was known as one of the most destructive batters failed to make an impact in the WC final as he got out for a duck while opening the Indian innings. Viru paaji took retirement from international cricket and also from IPL in the year 2015. He also worked as the coach of the IPL team Punjab Kings (earlier Kings XI Punjab) and now he is busy with commentary.

2. Sachin Tendulkar:

The legendary former Indian cricketer managed to touch the trophy in his sixth World Cup and in the finals, he scored 18 runs. After his retirement from international cricket in 2013, he is quite busy with his businesses which include chain of restaurants and a sports management company plus he is also involved in various philanthropic activities.

3. Gautam Gambhir:

Gautam Gambhir played an important innings of 97 runs in the finals which helped his team in winning the match. He played international cricket till 2016, he had a successful IPL stint as KKR won IPL two times under his leadership. In 2018, Gautam Gambhir turned towards commentary, currently he is a BJP MP, commentator and mentor of the IPL team Lucknow Super Giants.

4. Virat Kohli:

Virat Kohli is 34 yrs old and he is certainly playing his last ODI World Cup this year. In 2011 WC finals, he scored 35 runs.

5. MS Dhoni:

The Captain Cool was the Player of the Match as he played a brilliant knock of 91* runs and guided his team to victory. He took retirement from international cricket in 2019 but he is still playing IPL and he led his team CSK to the fifth IPL victory in IPL 2023.

6. Yuvraj Singh:

The former all-rounder cricketer was the Player of the Tournament in the 2011 ICC ODI World Cup and in the finals, he scored 21* runs and also dismissed two batters. After that, he got away from cricket for cancer treatment and then he again came back in the team. Yuvi is currently enjoying his life with his family and he is not seen much on TV.

7. Suresh Raina:

The left-handed batter didn’t get the chance to bat in the finals but he played some good cricket in the tournament especially in quarter-finals and semi-finals. He was an important part of India’s limited over squad till 2015 but after that he kept getting dropped and selected for around three years. In IPL 2021, CSK bid goodbye to him and he went unsold and now he is doing commentary.

8. Harbhajan Singh:

The spinner who is also known as Turbanator was India’s main spinner at one point of time and in the finals, he dismissed one batter in his 10 overs. However, after the WC, he was not able to get his place secured in the squad and in 2016, he played his last international match. Currently he is busy with commentary.

9. Zaheer Khan:

The former Indian pacer led Indian pace attack for a long time and in the 2011 World Cup, he was the joint leading wicket taker of the tournament which also included his two wickets of the final. He didn’t play much after that tournament because of injuries and the last ODI which he played was in 2012 while he played his last test match in 2014.

10. Munaf Patel:

Munaf was also an integral part of the Indian team for quite some time but he played very few matches after the 2011 WC and not much is known about him after he played his last IPL match in 2017. It seems that Munaf Patel is enjoying his life after retirement with his family members in Gujarat.

11. S. Sreesanth:

The WC 2011 final was the last ODI of this Kerala cricketer who was dropped from the team before the England tour and then his chances of comeback ended completely after he was arrested in 2013 spot fixing scandal and was banned by ICC from playing cricket. The ban was lifted but till then his chance of playing for India was totally over.  He has taken retirement and recently he participated in a league tournament.
