The Indian team started its ODI World Cup 2023 campaign yesterday by playing its first match against Australia at Chepauk stadium, Chennai. The Australian team may have won the toss but their decision of batting first didn’t prove fruitful as the whole team was all out for just 199 runs which is definitely below par as per their standards.

Steve Smith was the highest scorer for his team with 46 runs for which he faced 71 balls and his innings included 5 fours. David Warner (41 runs, 52 balls, 6 fours) and Marnus Labuschagne (27 runs, 41 balls, 1 four) also played useful innings and helped their team in saving some respect. Ravindra Jadeja, the Indian spinner was the pick of the bowlers for the Indian team as he dismissed 3 batters (Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and Alex Carey) and gave only 28 runs in his 10 overs. While Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav took 2-2 wickets each, Mohammed Siraj, Ravichandran Ashwin and Hardik Pandya dismissed 1-1 batter each.

Everyone felt that chasing this small total will be a cakewalk for the Indian team but things turned scary as skipper Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer got out for ducks and India was reeling at the score of 2 runs for 3 wickets. However, Virat Kohli was still there and with KL Rahul, he ensured that his team had no further problem in chasing the target. Virat Kohli and KL Rahul produced a partnership of 165 runs and this was certainly a special partnership as it was under huge pressure. Virat Kohli (85 runs, 116 balls, 6 fours) got out before the match got over but by that time, India was in a comfortable position and chased the target successfully in 41.2 overs with 6 wickets in hand. KL Rahul played some superb cricket as he remained unbeaten at 97* runs for which he played 115 balls and his innings included 8 fours & 2 sixes.
