Pat Cummins Talks About His Cricketing Priorities & His Future In The IPL
Pat Cummins, Australia’s test cricket captain, reiterated that representing his country in test cricket remains his top priority. While he has yet to decide on his participation in the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Pat Cummins emphasised on his commitment towards international cricket.
Pat Cummins, who led Sunrisers Hyderabad to the IPL 2024 final, was bought by the franchise for ₹20.50 crore, making him the second most expensive player in the tournament’s history. With the IPL 2025 mega auction scheduled later this year, teams are allowed to retain up to six players (a maximum of five capped, including both Indian and overseas players, and two uncapped players) via retention or by using the Right to Match (RTM) option.
Despite his success in the IPL, Pat Cummins is currently focused on the upcoming five-test Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against India which is set to take place next month. He has also acknowledged new IPL rules regarding overseas players, including a clause that makes players ineligible for the following year’s auction if they opt out of the current season’s auction. Another rule prevents players from participating for two seasons if they withdraw after being selected in the auction.
Pat Cummins says that he will work out soon how this IPL season will look like, adding that though there have been some changes in the rules, it wouldn’t have affected him in the past as he has never pulled out after taking part in the auction. However, at the same time, he also states that these changes in rules are certainly an important factor of the IPL now.
Pat Cummins further says that test cricket is certainly his number one priority, world cups are also there and he uses them as tent poles to see what will work around them. He opines that the cricketing calendar won’t be getting any less busy and he will also not get any younger and these are some conditions which he will need to take into consideration while moving forward but one thing is for sure – playing for his country especially in test format is his number one job and priority as well.
Talking about the series against India, he says that he has played a couple of home series against India and there is always an element to attrition associated with them. He recalled that the last series which they played against them was fought till the last session at the Gabba on the last day of the test match.
The Aussie skipper adds that the good thing to remember is that it is a long series which might be tightly held till the last game because of which they need to manage their resources properly.
Are you looking forward to the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024?
