“Everybody Would’ve Criticised Me…,” Rohit Sharma’s Dig At Critics After Winning Kanpur Test

Rohit Sharma, the skipper of the Indian cricket team, knew that India’s chances of winning the second Test against Bangladesh were slim after losing two and a half days to rain and a wet outfield at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur. To force a result, Rohit decided to adopt a T20-style aggressive batting approach in India’s first innings. However, he acknowledged that while aggression was necessary, it was a risky move, especially considering Bangladesh had already posted 233 runs in their first innings.

The Indian captain along with the head coach Gautam Gambhir and the rest of the team was prepared to take that risk. Rohit emphasized that in situations like these, the team had to play for a win, even if it meant risking failure by playing attacking shots. If India’s aggressive batting plan backfired, it could have handed the advantage to Bangladesh. Yet, Rohit credited the bowlers—Jasprit Bumrah, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja—for their role in bowling out Bangladesh for 233 after they resumed at 107/3 on Day 4.

In a video released by the BCCI, Rohit Sharma stated, “Without the help of the other 10 players and obviously those sitting in the dressing room, this wouldn’t have been possible. When you lose two and a half days, it’s very easy for everyone to drift away from the goal that we had of winning this Test. We came here on Day 4; we needed 7 wickets to get them out. Everything started there. The bowlers came to the party first. They got the wickets that we needed.”

When it was India’s turn to bat, Rohit and Yashasvi Jaiswal set a record-breaking tone by posting the fastest 50-run opening stand in the Test history, reaching the mark in just 18 balls. Reflecting on the approach, Rohit said that everything fell into place perfectly but he also acknowledged the risk involved if their aggressive plan had not succeeded.

He added, “We had to take risks to get a result. I know the result could have gone either way but I was ready for it, so was the coach and the other players. You have to be brave enough to take those decisions and go and play that way. When things fall in place, everything looks good and that is where, it can change very quickly when things don’t fall in place. Everybody would have started criticising the decision we took and all of that. But what matters is what we think inside this changing room and that is what matters.”

Hitman further said, “It was a clear plan that we want a result. How did we get that… everybody started finding answers to that.”

The Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin highlighted that this was not the first time India had aimed for aggressive cricket to turn the tide of a match, but this time Rohit “walked the talk” by leading from the front. Rohit added that his definition of aggression isn’t just about batting—it’s also about how the team bowls and fields, showcasing a holistic approach to the game.

Rohit Sharma certainly deserves to be praised for leading the team in such an aggressive manner.
