“Typical Indian Thing,” UK PM Rishi Sunak To Make Maths Compulsory Till Students Turn 18
There are many Indians who are making the country proud by performing well abroad whether it is in the field of sports, movies, politics, business, etc. and Rishi Sunak is one of them who made all of us happy and proud by becoming the Prime Minister of United Kingdom.
Recently, UK PM Rishi Sunak did something which prompted the Indian Twitter to call him an Indian uncle and it is related to the one of the favourite subjects of Indian uncles, i.e., mathematics.
As per a report, Rishi Sunak is planning to make some changes in the UK education system as he wants to provide the highest standard of education to every student of his country and most probably the first step will be making mathematics a compulsory subject for all the students till they attain the age of 18.
Recently, Rishi Sunak stated that nearly 8 million people in UK have the same mathematical skills and knowledge as of a primary kid and only half of the 16-19 yrs old youngsters study maths. He further said that every opportunity which he got, he got it because of education and he was very lucky enough to have it. He added that with right planning and commitment to achieve excellence, they can certainly compete with the best education systems of the world.
Rishi Sunak goes on to say that one of the biggest changes that they have to bring in their education is to reconsider their approach towards numeracy because in today’s world, there is data everywhere and stats is a part of every job which means that their children will need more analytical skills in their job than ever needed and if their children foray into the world without learning analytical skills, it would mean that they had let their children down.
Though there are no details available regarding when the revision of UK school curriculum will start, this gave enough fodder to the Indian Twitterati. While many called him the Indian uncle, others state that it should be compulsory till 10th but not after that as not every person has to pursue a career in a field which requires advanced level mathematics. Here are some selected reactions:

Maths after 10th standard gets too difficult and complicated. Personally, I don't think students should be forced to learn it beyond 10th if they don't want to. I didn't.

High time that we learn the practical application of mathematics instead just wasting our time on differentiation or integration. Statistics should be made must as well.
