Suryakumar Yadav captained India to a historic triumph at the 2026 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup but that success was not enough to keep him in the squad for the team’s upcoming assignments. The BCCI men’s selection committee decided to leave him out and appointed Shreyas Iyer as India’s new T20 captain after the World Cup.

According to a report, the BCCI has not completely ruled out a comeback for the experienced batter. A source told the news agency that Suryakumar Yadav remains eligible for selection if he performs consistently and scores plenty of runs in domestic cricket.

The source said that although Suryakumar is not currently part of the team’s plans, the selectors are still open to considering him if he proves his form through strong performances.

To make a comeback, Suryakumar Yadav will have to return to domestic cricket, where he represents Mumbai. Apart from staying motivated, he will need to deliver consistent performances and score heavily to convince the selectors that he deserves another opportunity.

Last year, Suryakumar Yadav failed to score a single half-century in 19 innings, raising questions about his consistency. However, he showed signs of regaining form during India’s T20I series against New Zealand earlier this year, where he scored three half-centuries in five matches. He also started India’s 2026 T20 World Cup campaign brilliantly with a match-winning unbeaten 84. But his form dipped as the tournament progressed. Across the remaining eight matches, he managed only 158 runs, including a duck in the final.

His struggles continued in the IPL 2026 while playing for Mumbai Indians. He scored 270 runs in 13 innings at a strike rate of 147.54, numbers that were not enough to retain his place in India’s T20I squad.

Meanwhile, India’s results under new captain Shreyas Iyer have not been encouraging. Since taking over, India have lost six of their last seven T20 Internationals, while one match ended without a result due to rain.

Reports suggest that India’s poor run has largely been because the team struggled to adjust to playing conditions in Ireland and England. The Indian team will now shift its focus to the one-day format, hoping to leave behind its disappointing T20 performances and return to winning ways.

For Suryakumar Yadav, the message from the selectors is clear. His international career is not over yet but the path back will depend entirely on his performances in domestic cricket. If he can rediscover his best form and pile up runs consistently, another opportunity to wear the Indian jersey could still come his way.
