A skin-whitening cream sold through online platforms has come under intense scrutiny after reports linked it to serious health issues in Maharashtra. The product, called Goree Beauty Cream, has triggered widespread concern after authorities reportedly found extremely high levels of mercury in laboratory tests, raising questions about its safety and availability in India.

The issue surfaced in Nagpur, where 18 women reportedly developed kidney-related problems over a period of two years. According to information shared by health content creator Chirag Barjatya, doctors treating the women noticed a common pattern during their investigations. They found that all of the affected women had been using Goree Beauty Cream, which is said to be manufactured in Pakistan and was available for purchase on Meesho as well as through several Instagram sellers.

Following these reports, the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) collected samples of the cream for laboratory testing. The tests reportedly found that the product contained mercury levels that were 752 times higher than the legally permitted limit.

As the issue gained attention on social media, Meesho issued a statement saying that it was investigating the matter. The company said it was in the process of removing the reported products from its platform and stressed that maintaining a safe marketplace for customers remains a top priority.

The reports also triggered strong reactions from social media users. Many people questioned how a product reportedly manufactured in Pakistan was available for sale in India, while others expressed surprise that the cream had become popular, particularly in rural areas. Several users called for stricter regulation and even demanded a complete ban on the product if the reported findings were confirmed.

The incident has also renewed concerns about the risks associated with unregulated skin-lightening products sold online. Experts often advise consumers to purchase skincare products only from trusted brands and authorised sellers, carefully check ingredient labels and avoid products containing harmful substances such as mercury.
