Annu Kapoor Challenges Shah Rukh Khan’s ‘Last Superstar’ Tag, Predicts About His Future

For years, Bollywood has debated whether Shah Rukh Khan is truly the “last of the stars”. While many fans support the idea, veteran actor Annu Kapoor believes no single actor can be given that title, saying the film industry has always created new icons with time.

Annu Kapoor, who worked with Shah Rukh Khan in Yash Chopra’s 1993 film Darr, said the media has often described actors as the “last superstar”. He pointed out that a similar narrative existed during Rajesh Khanna’s peak but cinema continued to evolve and introduce new stars.

Instead, Annu Kapoor highlighted the long-lasting careers of Amitabh Bachchan, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle, saying very few artistes have remained relevant for so many decades.

Speaking about Shah Rukh Khan without mentioning his name repeatedly, Annu Kapoor noted that the actor started his career around 1992 and has now spent roughly 34 years in the film industry. He compared this with Amitabh Bachchan’s much longer journey and questioned whether Shah Rukh would be able to stay equally relevant for another 19 years.

At the same time, Annu acknowledged Shah Rukh Khan’s remarkable success, saying his global popularity, wealth and achievements cannot be ignored.

When asked about sharing screen space with Shah Rukh Khan in Darr, Annu Kapoor first said he did not remember working with him. After being reminded about the 1993 thriller, he explained that Shah Rukh was still a newcomer at the time and that he himself was only part of the film for three days of shooting.

He further said that he was not closely involved with the production, adding that he had nothing to do with SRK and when he had nothing to do with someone then he has only blessing and prayers for that person.

Although Annu Kapoor disagreed with calling Shah Rukh the “last superstar”, he praised him as a family man. He said he had heard that SRK is a caring father, husband and brother, adding that these qualities are more valuable than fame. According to Annu, superstars may come and go but the way a person looks after their family is what truly matters.

The debate began after Shah Rukh Khan described himself as the “last of the stars” during Anupam Kher’s talk show Kuch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai in 2014.

Actor Vivek Oberoi has also expressed a similar opinion about fame, saying that even the biggest stars may one day become distant names for future generations.
