BCCI To Retire MS Dhoni’s No. 7 Jersey To Pay Tribute For His Immense Contribution

MS Dhoni, the former Indian skipper is still one of the most loved cricketers of the country and he is an inspiration to many young and aspiring cricketers as well.

MS Dhoni is the only skipper who made the country proud by winning ICC T20I World Cup 2007, ICC ODI World Cup 2011 and ICC Champions Trophy 2013 and for the last 10 years, Indian cricket fans have been waiting to see the Indian team win an ICC trophy. This time in ICC ODI World Cup 2023, many felt that the Indian squad led by Rohit Sharma will end this drought but team India lost the finals to Australia.

MS Dhoni used to wear number 7 jersey while playing at international level and as per the rules, number 7 jersey could be given to some other newcomer after Dhoni’s retirement but the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has decided to retire the number 7 jersey so that no other player can wear it.

The BCCI has decided to take this step as a gesture of paying tribute and respect to the former skipper for the immense contribution that he has made towards Indian cricket.

A BCCI official stated that the members of the Indian squad especially the debutants have been informed that number 7 is no more available. Earlier, the similar honour was given to the legendary former Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar as his number 10 jersey was also retired by the BCCI as a mark of respect towards the cricketer.

As per the International Cricket Council, a player can chose any number between 1 and 100 but in India, things are a little difficult. An official stated that there are around 60 numbers from which a player can choose but even if a player is out of the team for a year or so, his jersey number is not given to any other player because of which a debutant has only 30-odd choices to choose from.

MS Dhoni certainly deserves this respect!
