“Grow Up,” Ex India All-Rounder Hits Out At Mitchell Starc For Using Deepti’s Name To Warn Buttler
It seems that some members of the global cricket fraternity have not been able to cope up with the incident involving the Indian woman cricketer Deepti Sharma and the England woman cricketer Charlie Dean in which the former mankaded the latter in the final ODI of the 3-match series which was won by India by 3-0. Though mankad is now termed as run-out and it is completely within the laws of cricket, many feel that it is against the spirit of the game because of which a number of former English cricketers, fans and mediapersons slammed Deepti Sharma for dismissing Charlie Dean when she was trying to take undue advantage by leaving the crease even before the ball was bowled by the bowler.
However, the slamming and trolling had no effect on the Indian woman cricketer because she was backed strongly by her skipper, teammates, management and the BCCI. Deepti Sharma also got good support on social media platforms as former Indian cricketers and Indian fans left no stone unturned in giving mouthful answers to English online users who tried to troll Deepti.
Recently, Deepti Sharma’s name popped up in a T20I match between men’s cricket teams of England and Australia which was played at Manuka Oval, Canberra, Australia. This was the final match of the 3-match T20I series and it ended without any result as it was affected by rain. The match was reduced to 12 overs per innings, while England batted for 12 overs, Australia was able to play around 4 overs only before the match had to be cancelled because of rain.
During the England innings, Australian pacer Mitchell Starc saw that England skipper Jos Buttler who was at non-striker end was leaving the crease early so the Aussie pacer warned him. However while warning Jos Buttler, Mitchell Starc gave reference of the Indian woman cricketer Deepti Sharma as he said, “I am not Deepti, but I won’t do it. Doesn’t mean you can leave early,” and the English skipper responded with, “I don’t think I did”.

The conversation was caught by stump mic and though Mitchell Starc was praised for his awareness, he was also slammed for taking Deepti’s name unnecessarily in this matter. Many Indian fans and former cricketers including Hemang Badani slammed Mitchell Starc for this act.
Hemang Badani tweeted, “Grow up Starc. That’s really poor from you. What Deepti did was well within the rules of the game. If you only want to warn the non striker and not get him out that’s fine and your decision to make but you bringing Deepti into this isn’t what the cricket world expects of you”.

There is no denying the fact that taking Deepti’s name was not needed here and Mitchell Starc shouldn’t have done that. What are your views in this regard? Do let us know.
