“He’s Not Worth Blowing Whole Salary On,” Watson Says MI Is At Bottom Coz It Paid 15 Cr For Kishan
The five times IPL winner Mumbai Indians is going through a rough patch in the IPL 2022 as it has lost five successive matches in the tournament and is at the bottom in the points table. It is really difficult to believe that Rohit Sharma led squad which has won IPL 5 times is performing so poorly in the tournament and recently former Australian cricketer Shane Watson talked about the reason behind MI’s dismal performance in this season.
Shane Watson feels that MI has made a mistake by spending a huge amount of Rs. 15.25 crore on Ishan Kishan as it has made them compromise on the overall composition and quality of the team. During an interview, the former Aussie cricketer who is currently serving as the assistant coach of Delhi Capitals states that he isn’t really surprised with the poor performance of MI.
He adds that though Ishan Kishan is a very talented player, he is not so worthy that you spend your whole salary on him. He further says that MI also spent Rs. 8 crore on Jofra Archer without even knowing when he would return on the cricket field and he hasn’t played for quite a long time as well. Watson feels that this has affected the quality of the team to a great extent and has left them with few holes.
MI retained Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav and Kieron Pollard ahead of the mega-auctions for the IPL 2022 and went all guns blazing for Ishan Kishan in the auctions. The Mumbai team will need to perform exceptionally well from here onwards if it wants to enter the play-offs.
Shane Watson also analyzed MS Dhoni led Chennai Super Kings which is the second most successful team with four IPL wins but it is also having a tough time in the tournament as it has lost four out of 5 matches it has played. Watson says that the biggest problem that is being faced by CSK is its fast bowling, he adds that earlier they had Shardul Thakur who is with DC now. Watson further says that CSK has spent a lot on Deepak Chahar who is said to be ruled out of the tournament due to injury and it does not have quality foreign pacers because of which it is facing problem in the IPL 2022.
CSK is also playing with a new skipper Ravindra Jadeja as MS Dhoni has given up his captaincy just before the start of the tournament. It may have shown some improvement in its last match against Royal Challengers Bangalore which CSK won but it also needs to work hard if it does not want to miss playing the play-offs.
Do you agree with Shane Watson that MI has made a big mistake by spending so much on Ishan Kishan? What are your views in regard to CSK and MI’s performance this year? Let us know.
