Tanushree Dutta Takes A Dig At Bollywood Veterans, Calls Them Chaalbaaz

What does it really mean to be a “senior” in the film industry? According to actress Tanushree Dutta, it has nothing to do with age and everything to do with character.

In a video shared on Monday, the Aashiq Banaya Aapne star spoke candidly about the lessons she’s picked up over the course of her career, particularly around trust and respect. Her core message: don’t assume someone deserves your trust just because they’re older or labelled a “veteran” in the industry. Respect, she said, should be earned through character, not handed out based on age.

Looking back at her career, Tanushree Dutta recalled how big a star she once was. She admitted she wasn’t necessarily the number one actress of her time or a “super duper star” but she was, in her words, a genuinely big name in the industry.

She also pushed back on how seniority is typically understood in Bollywood. In her view, being a “senior” isn’t about how long someone has been around, it’s about how well their career is currently doing. An actor becomes a “senior” when their star is rising and a “star” is simply whoever’s film is currently a hit.

Tanushree Dutta also revisited a difficult chapter from her career, a film set where she felt she was unfairly targeted. She said a group of people worked together to make her the fall guy in a controversy, even though she was the most prominent star present at the time. Reflecting on that period, she acknowledged she wasn’t very “street smart” back then and hadn’t yet learned to navigate the industry’s more cunning, calculated side.

She ended her reflections with a broader message: look past someone’s age, appearance or background, and instead judge them for who they truly are.

In the caption accompanying the video, Tanushree Dutta elaborated further, explaining her past assumptions and how they’d changed. She said she used to feel sympathetic toward older actors who weren’t getting work and would want to help them out but she’s come to see things differently. In her view, being called a “veteran” in Bollywood often doesn’t mean someone is simply experienced; it can mean they’re shrewd, calculating and skilled at manipulating both the media and public perception, sometimes as a way to shield their real character or past actions from scrutiny.

She reiterated her central point: never trust someone purely because of their age. According to her, some of the most harmful and ill-intentioned people, those who resent younger, privileged individuals and actively try to bring them down, fall into the “veteran” category. She said that Bollywood has witnessed this pattern repeat itself many times over the years.

Tanushree Dutta urged people to look at others as souls first, before judging them by age, appearance or background, describing the world as something built by genuine people but often damaged by those who hide behind a false sense of respectability. She went further into symbolic and spiritual territory, suggesting that some individuals are almost demonic in nature , “veteran” not just in age but in how long they’ve practiced deception, comparing them to ancient, enduring forces of negativity, with some people, in her belief, embodying such forces to mislead others.

She closed by saying this was an important lesson she’s taken to heart, today, she chooses to give respect based on who a person truly is, their character, not how old they are.
