BCCI Set To Revise Annual Contracts, Will Virat Kohli Get Retained In A+ Category?

As the Indian men’s cricket team led by Rohit Sharma prepares for the much-anticipated Champions Trophy final against New Zealand, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is closely monitoring the outcome of the tournament before finalising the annual central contracts. Unlike the previous year, when the contracts were announced in late February, the process has been delayed this time around.

Reports indicate that the postponement is a strategic move by the board, allowing them to assess the performances of the players in the ongoing tournament before making final decisions. There is also speculation that changes may be on the horizon for the elite A+ category, which currently includes stalwarts like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja.

This highest contract grade is traditionally awarded to players excelling across all the formats. However, with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja stepping away from T20Is after the last World Cup and experiencing a challenging season in Tests that saw India miss out on a spot in the World Test Championship final, their status is under review. A strong showing in the Champions Trophy, however, could bolster their standing within the BCCI’s evaluation.

The board is expected to wait until the conclusion of the Champions Trophy before making key decisions, particularly regarding any possible retirements or contract adjustments. Sources suggest that Rohit Sharma’s future plans could influence these considerations, as his leadership in recent ICC tournaments has been a significant factor in India’s performances.

Last year, Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan lost their central contracts after the BCCI took a firm stance against the players opting out of domestic cricket. While Ishan Kishan has been absent from the international scene since late 2023, Shreyas Iyer continues to be an integral part of India’s ODI lineup, making him a strong contender for reinstatement in the upcoming contract list.

In the previous cycle, the BCCI awarded contracts to 30 players, distributing them across different categories, with six players in Grade A, five in Grade B and 15 in Grade C.

Additionally, the selection committee provided specialised fast-bowling contracts to emerging pacers such as Akash Deep, Yash Dayal, Umran Malik, Vijaykumar Vyshak and V Kaverappa.

This year’s contract allocations will likely reflect the Champions Trophy performances, adding further weight to the significance of the final match.
