Shaheen Afridi Reacts To Gary Kirsten’s Remarks On Bowlers’ Workload, Says It’s About Mindset

Pakistan’s star fast bowler Shaheen Afridi has countered recent concerns raised by Gary Kirsten about the workload of the team’s pacers. Kirsten, the former South African cricketer, had expressed his views on the pressure faced by key bowlers like Afridi and Naseem Shah to consistently lead the team to victory. He argued that they were being overworked; however, Afridi dismissed these claims in an interview.

Shaheen Afridi stated that he doesn’t understand why this issue has become so big in the past one year as it is a matter which depends on the individual player and a bowler wouldn’t be able to perform if he becomes lazy. Shaheen Afridi emphasised the importance of mental strength for consistent performance. He pointed out that being ‘lazy’ or unmotivated hampers performance, not necessarily the workload.

Shaheen Afridi is of the opinion that a player needs to be mentally strong and the performance is more about mindset than overexertion. He also calls for management support when a player is not in the best physical shape, explaining that while the workload might not be extreme, players should enjoy playing cricket at every opportunity.

Afridi referenced Pakistan’s rich history of producing fast bowlers, noting that their legendary pacers like Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis never had workload issues and the current generation could learn from their resilience.

The workload discussion began during Kirsten’s commentary stint at the Champions Cup match between the Panthers and Lions last week. Kirsten highlighted that Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah have shouldered a large part of Pakistan’s bowling responsibilities across all the formats. He cited a stat, mentioning that Shaheen had bowled three times more overs than any other fast bowler globally in the last 18 months, which could lead to physical strain.

Shaheen Afridi will soon return to the field in Pakistan’s first Test match against England, starting on October 8 in Multan. After struggling to find his rhythm across formats recently, the fast bowler is determined to regain his form in the upcoming series.

Former cricketer Yuvraj Singh recently revealed an amusing story from his time on the India-Australia tour of 2007-08. In an appearance on the Club Prairie Fire podcast, Yuvraj shared that he was dating a popular actress during that time. Though he did not name her, he hinted that she is a well-known and experienced actress today. The incident took place during the same tour that featured the infamous ‘Monkeygate’ controversy in Sydney.

Yuvraj explained that while the actress was in Australia for a film shoot, she decided to visit him, following him to Canberra. This came at a stressful period in his career, as Yuvraj was struggling with his performance during the series.

Yuvraj recalled how he had asked the actress to avoid meeting him during the tour so he could focus on his game. Despite his request, she followed him to Canberra, hoping to spend time with him. During a late-night chat, Yuvraj emphasized the need for both of them to focus on their careers, especially given the pressure he was facing on the tour.

Here is what he said on the podcast, “I was dating an actress, I won’t name her; (She is) very good at the moment and very experienced. She was shooting in Adelaide. I told her, listen, let’s not meet for a bit because I’m on Australia tour, and need to focus. She followed me to Canberra in the bus. In two Tests, I didn’t get many runs. And I was like, ‘what are you doing here?’ And she was like, ‘I want to spend time with you’.”

However, the funniest part of the story came when the actress packed his suitcase, unknowingly placing his shoes inside it. Just minutes before boarding the team bus, Yuvraj realised that his shoes were missing. With no other option, the actress suggested him to wear her pink slip-ons. Left with no choice, Yuvraj had to hide his feet as he boarded the bus. His teammates, noticing the pink slip-ons, cheered and clapped for him. Yuvi kept on wearing the pink slip-ons until he reached airport where he bought flip-flops.

He further added, “So, I met her in the night and we began chatting. I told her you need to focus on your career and I need to focus on mine, because I’m on Australia tour and you know what that means. Anyway, we were leaving for Adelaide from Canberra and she packed my suitcase. In the morning, I was like ‘where are my shoes’? She said, ‘I packed them’. I asked, ‘How would I go on the bus’? And she said, ‘Wear mine’. She had these pink slip-ons. And I was like, ‘Oh my god’. I had to wear those pink slip-ons, and I was carrying my bag in front of my shoes to hide them. The guys saw it, and they clapped for me. I had to wear pink slip-ons to the airport until I bought flip-flops there.”

While speaking on a show, Sanjay Manjrekar said, “I’m not worried, but I’m sure somebody made a note of the fact that they would have been better off had they played some red-ball cricket. There was the option of picking them in the Duleep Trophy. So one has to be careful about treating certain players differently and do what’s best for Indian cricket and for the player.”

Manjrekar believes that had Rohit and Kohli played in the Duleep Trophy, it would have benefited their Test form. However, he remains confident in their abilities and expects them to bounce back in the second Test, which starts on Friday in Kanpur.

The former Indian cricketer further said, “Virat and Rohit not playing (Duleep Trophy) was not good for Indian cricket, nor was it good for the two players. Had they played the Duleep Trophy and had some time in the red-ball cricket, things would have been different. But they have the class and experience to make a comeback later in the series, and I don’t see them, for that reason, not being in form.”

Sanjay Manjrekar added, “But something that one must make a quiet note of, and that has been a problem with Indian cricket for a long time now, is that certain players get picked out for special treatment because of their status, which eventually hurts that player more than anyone else.”

Yuvraj Singh Makes Bold Prediction About Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Compares It With World Cup

The highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy is set to begin later this year, with India traveling to Australia to defend the prestigious title in a five-match Test series. The former India international cricketer Yuvraj Singh believes that winning a series in Australia is one of the biggest achievements in cricket and he also compared it to the significance of winning a World Cup.

India has fond memories of their previous tours to Australia, having won back-to-back Test series on Australian soil in 2018-19 and 2020-21. Yuvraj is confident that the current Indian team has what it takes to make it three consecutive series wins. His optimism stems from India’s historic comeback in the 2020 series, where, after being bowled out for 36 in the first Test, they rallied under the leadership of Ajinkya Rahane to clinch a 2-1 victory.

While speaking at the YouTube show Club Prairie Fire with Adam Gilchrist and Michael Vaughan, Yuvi stated, “Beating Australia twice in Australia is quite big, especially with our past history where we did not win in Australia. The team definitely will be prepared and as long as they are prepared I am sure they will do well. But it is not going to easy beating Australia in Australia– that’s like winning a World Cup. So, it is not impossible, but if they prepare well and if they stick together as a group I think they can win.”

Yuvraj pointed out that one of the main reasons behind India’s recent success in Australia is their extensive preparation. The current Indian squad has shown that with the right mindset and planning, they can consistently compete and win in challenging overseas conditions.

Yuvraj Singh said, “When India was 30 odd all out the previous tour and they won the series 2-1 from there, I would have never thought India could 2-1 in Australia after losing like that. We came pretty close, but this generation of players had 11 match winners, it was hard to beat them.”

He further added, “I think the current generation played cricket in terms of not thinking too much about the opposition. The preparation of the younger guys was really good. Like in 2003 or 2007 we had a week or 10 days or 2 weeks to prepare, but the last group prepared really well for the last tour – I mean the result is irrelevant – I think their preparation was really good the last tour and the one before that.”

Cricket experts have shared their predictions for the upcoming series. While former players like Michael Vaughan and Adam Gilchrist have tipped Australia to win with scorelines of 3-1 and 3-2, respectively, Yuvraj Singh has backed India to emerge victorious.

Yuvi said, “Two guys have gone for Australia, I should add India here and I say 3-2 to India.”

The first Test of the series will begin on November 22, 2023, at Perth Stadium in Perth. Adelaide Oval will host the only Day-Night Test starting from December 6, 2023. The third Test will take place at The Gabba in Brisbane from December 14, followed by the iconic Boxing Day Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. The fifth and final Test will be held at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

India’s dominance over Australia in Test cricket has been evident over the past few years. In addition to their two consecutive series wins in Australia (2018-19 and 2020-21), India also attained triumph in home series against Australia, winning four straight Border-Gavaskar Trophies.
